Shouldn\u2019t you be upgrading for better productivity!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>When you buy a plastic processing machine, the plasticising screw is often supplied with a General Purpose (G.P.) design and nitrided wear resistance. In many cases the OEM won\u2019t have been told you only process particular material grades, and a GP screw provides the biggest processing window across the spectrum of materials.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This design however, will always be a compromise&#8230;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Both in terms of wear resistance and process capabilities. As an example, if you\u2019re processing a glass filled material, the serviceable life of a nitrided screw will be greatly reduced.\u00a0 Nitriding produces an extremely hard surface, but only penetrates a few \u2018thou\u2019 into the surface of the steel.\u00a0 Once you wear through this layer, the steel below is relatively soft.<\/p>\n<p>So when the time comes to replace your original OEM screw, what should you do?<\/p>\n<p>First \u2018port of call\u2019 will probably be the OEM.\u00a0 They may even have another G.P. screw on the shelf.\u00a0 If however you now process a particular grade or group of materials, you should be considering some other options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Polymer Specific.\u00a0 <\/strong>All quality OEM\u2019s and most independent screw manufacturers will be able to produce a screw with a polymer specific profile.\u00a0 For example, if you are processing nylon, there will be a profile with a less aggressive compression zone, so you are less likely to \u2018burn\u2019 your material.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wear Resistance.\u00a0 <\/strong>A variety of hard surfacing materials and surface coatings are available, depending on the type of process and the abrasive and\/or corrosive nature of the material.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Higher Throughput.\u00a0 <\/strong>Additions such as barrier flights when processing commodity plastics (P.S., P.E. and P.P.) can boost throughput by 15 to 20%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Better Homogeneity.\u00a0 <\/strong>Barrier flights and mixing sections can improve melt consistency and disperse additives (such as colour masterbatch) more evenly. This can often reduce the percentage of masterbatch used.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A Better G.P. Screw.\u00a0 <\/strong>A more advanced General Purpose Screw, such as the patented \u2018Posi-melt\u2019 solution supplied by Cooper Technology, is an excellent option for Trade Moulders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As for lead times, an OEM is less likely to have a \u2018tailored\u2019 design on the shelf, and lead times can be longer than that of a UK based independent specialist.\u00a0 As for cost, you will probably be able to buy a screw with specified profile and\/or hard faced flights from a specialist for less than the standard OEM nitrided unit.<\/p>\n<p>You can access the UK\u2019s leading independent <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plastikcity.co.uk\/screws-and-barrels\">Screw &amp; Barrel manufacturers<\/a><\/span> using the PlastikCity site.
