On Sunday the 4th<\/sup>\u00a0of March news had broken across the UK that a spy in the UK had been found poisoned on a bench outside a shopping mall in Salisbury, due to a deliberate or accidental leaking of a dangerous chemical. <\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to the British Prime Minister Theresa May, the government believe that Russia is the party responsible for the incident. Novichok, Russian for \u2018newcomer\u2019, is thought to be the poison used and it is part of a group of nerve agents which can kill within minutes. Therefore preventing the leaking of a dangerous chemical is crucial.<\/p>\n

According to the BBC, if a person becomes exposed to the poison, they should remove their clothing and wash their skin with soap and water. Also, they should rinse their eyes and be given oxygen.<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, the chemical warfare weapons allegedly used in Salisbury fall under the remit of the UN regulations on transportation of dangerous goods. Therefore the containers in which they are stored should have undergone extensive testing to ensure that they can securely hold the chemical without leaking of a dangerous chemical.\u00a0These regulations are set out in the\u00a0UN dangerous goods handbook<\/a>,\u00a0which sets out how dangerous chemicals (ranging from Novichok to rotten potatoes) can be transported and stored globally.<\/p>\n

An example of such a container is made by\u00a0Saab<\/a>\u00a0with their CBRNe range.\u00a0CBRNe stands for \u201cChemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and high yield Explosives\u201d and is used by militaries and companies across the globe to transport the most dangerous of substances.<\/p>\n

These containers will have passed a number of standard UN tests, to prevent the leaking of a dangerous chemical when in use.\u00a0 The Saab packaging has passed the \u201cClass 6.2\u201d requirements which means it will have passed the followings tests:<\/p>\n

  1. Drop impact from 9m<\/li>\n
  2. Stack tests<\/li>\n
  3. Puncture tests<\/li>\n
  4. Pressure tests<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In addition, the inner and outer packaging should be able to withstand ~95kPA of pressure differential.\u00a0 In addition to the standard tests, the containers must comply with packaging note P620 which explains how a package must be packed, and what associated information should be displayed, such as warning labels and instructions to the shipper of what to do in the event of the leaking of a dangerous chemical. Many of the infectious substances shipped in this type of packaging are covered by the UN numbers\u00a0UN 2814<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0UN 2900<\/a>\u00a0and will be regularly shipped for a range of peaceful activities such as medical research.<\/p>\n

    While the poison \u2018Novichok\u2019 used on the spy isn\u2019t being sold in today\u2019s markets, a number of other potentially lethal dangerous goods are transported regularly in the UK. It is a legal requirement to make sure that the chemicals deemed as dangerous goods are packaged safely.
