|MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:|| An opportunity has arisen for BWC Group to take on an experienced Plastic Extrusion Manager to take a leading role in the development and management of our extrusion service.
The plastic extrusion department is set within medium-sized multidisciplinary contract manufacturing and distribution business. We make a variety of profiles, mostly in rigid and flexible PVC but also in other materials for a variety of applications and industries. We currently have 6 operational extrusion lines of varying provenance and age.
The department was located in Cornwall until roughly 2 years ago when all our facilities were moved under one roof in Milton Keynes. We have been in a transitional period where the Cornish staff have been travelling to Milton Keynes to work and residing here during the week, this is now coming to and end, creating an urgent need for a skilled technical and managerial lead, in this department.
You will take responsibility for two shift supervisors and their 3-5 operatives, over two shifts day shift (7am-7pm) and night shift (7pm-7am). This will mean you will need to be flexible and arrange your diary so that you spend some time with both shifts each week. From time to time you may be needed to work alongside the night shift to help with hands-on training/development etc.
You will be looked to by the mixed experienced level team for your technical expertise, training and mentoring ability, planning and briefing skills, fault diagnosis and correction and process understanding – some would describe you as a guru in your field.
We do have a tendency to be chaotic and reactive in our approach – there is a real opportunity for a strong leader to make their mark in this department and bring structure, routine, discipline and consistency into day-to-day operations. Through a program of continual improvement- driven by you – the team members will be upskilled, work more safely, deliver higher levels of quality and be more efficient. You will need to be a patient, self-starter who can communicate their ideas clearly and has the will and determination to see projects through and sustains the delivered changes.

You will play a leading role in:
Selecting new extrusion plant and equipment
Installation/commission/training of new equipment
Establishing a routine preventative maintenance program
Research and development/costing of new potential jobs
Running initial trials of new dies
Establishing and maintaining a skills matrix
Building better SOPs and applying lean/six sigma principles to the department
Organising repairs/servicing of machines and tools
Keeping a well-organised tool room
All other aspects of day-to-day management of the department
You will lead the team to:
Assess skills and build/implement personal development plans
Conduct annual reviews with all team members in your charge
Develop daily routines to boost workflow and productivity
Promote better housekeeping and enforce health and safety policy compliance
Passing on lean manufacturing skills
Promoting a culture of accountability, thinking ahead and working together
You will take full ownership and accountability for the departments KPIs including:
Overall equipment effectiveness/throughput
Shop floor data capture recording
Compound material use/issuing
Quality control and assurance/customer complaints
Scrap rate recording/reduction
Housekeeping & health and safety compliance of the department
|QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:||Strong leadership skills - patient, encouraging, upbeat and positive
Technical plastic extrusion experience (minimum of 5 years)
Lean manufacturing training/six sigma experience
Basic level of mechanical/electrical engineering experience for diagnosing/fixing minor faults
Good level of computer literacy – with word, excel and manufacturing systems
Excellent people skills and the ability to deliver hands-on training
Good time management skills
Good project management skills
Experience with Health & Safety (possibly IOSH or NEBOSH qualified)
