Job overview

We are seeking a Technical Support Manager (TSM) to join our Technical Department, reporting directly to the Technical Director.

The position involves liaising with both internal departments and external suppliers from an engineering perspective and will occasionally include travel within, and very occasionally outside, the UK. However, the majority of time (95%+) will be spent in-house and within the shop floor environment.

This role would suit a time-served, experienced Toolmaker/Fitter who has progressed through Foreman or Supervisory level and is looking for a broader role with future development opportunities.

Company overview

Taylor Engineering and Plastics, established in 1977, is a key provider of both thermoplastic and thermoset mouldings across a wide range of business sectors. Additional processes include extensive painting/finishing capabilities across 4 further locations in Rochdale, together with detailed component assembly. Along with the full provision of prototypes and production tooling, TEP provides a full "one stop shop" for customers technical polymer products.

Role responsibilities

  • Manage, prioritise and carry out tooling repairs, insert changes and modifications.
  • Strip, assess and commission new tooling, ensuring it adheres to company standards and expectations.
  • Support the sampling of new tools and modify where necessary.
  • Prioritise and issue work to employees.
  • Identify and source replacement parts, tooling and consumables.
  • Quote for and obtain quotes for tooling repairs and modifications, advising the company of target costs.
  • Manage, assess and prioritise jig, fixture and stillage requests.
  • Oversee and/or carry out the modification and repair of stillage, bonding, assembly, routing and machining fixtures as necessary.
  • Communicate with Production and Technical Sales to identify lead times, build stock to create repair windows and ensure tooling/fixtures are ready for the next production run.
  • Manage sub-contractors to ensure tooling, jigs, fixtures and stillage meet company standards.
  • Commission new production tooling, stillage and fixtures.
  • Reverse engineer bespoke tooling requirements, document and source critical spares, and issue to production as required.
  • Specify, source and introduce tooling for post-moulding operations.
  • Specify, source and manufacture post-moulding fixtures as necessary.
  • Evaluate current production processes and strengthen processes through new tooling, fixtures and build processes.
  • Evaluate new product lines and specify new assembly tooling, fixtures, stillage and process requirements.

Benefits/package

  • Salary: £45,000+.
  • Full-time, 39 hours per week.
  • Day shift pattern: Monday to Thursday: 8:00am to 5:00pm & Friday: 8:00am to 1:00pm
  • Life assurance plus pension contribution.

Qualifications/experience required

  • Time-served Toolmaker/Fitter background.
  • Previous experience in tooling repair, modification and commissioning.
  • Experience working within a technical or engineering environment.
  • Previous Foreman, Supervisory or Team Leader experience would be advantageous.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with internal departments and external suppliers.
  • Experience within a manufacturing environment, ideally plastics processing.
