Design 4 Plastics is a product design and development consultancy specializing in innovative plastic solutions. Since 1979, we have worked with businesses to take ideas from early concepts to functional production ready products. We offer advice and support based on extensive industry knowledge.
All prospective projects start with a FREE no obligation consultation at our office in Wetherby, near Leeds. This allows us to understand your idea or current product, how we can offer support and produce a step-by-step development proposal.
We then take your idea through these key phases (can vary dependent on project needs).
1. Research – This allows us to build a foundational understanding around your idea/current product. We investigate competitor products to identify points for improvement and determine limitations based on existing patents. We also start to consider potential materials, processes and technologies which may be suitable.
2. Concept Generation – At this point we create a brief and generate a wide range of concepts in the form of sketches and identify potential project directions, we consider the primary function; how the product works and how it is used, alongside exploring the overall aesthetics.
3. Initial 3D CAD – We then take the most promising ideas and develop 3D models using CAD software, this brings structure to the idea, and we can begin to develop bespoke parts and test how they may be assembled.
4. Test Prototypes – Using the CAD models we then create functional prototypes using our workshop and 3D printer. This allows us to fully test mechanisms, refine complex geometry and ensure the project is on the right track before further development.
5. 3D CAD development – Once we are mutually happy with the design, we then refine the features of the CAD model(s) to be production ready.
6. Photorealistic Render – We can place your product in its intended environment and produce realistic imagery which can be used for marketing and presentations.
7. Presentation Prototypes – To validate design, function, and usability before production, a fully working prototype is created from the 3D model using advanced 3D printing technologies. This ensures confidence before committing to tooling and manufacture.
8. Final Detail – Any modifications required from the previous phase are carried out, then the design is frozen and a package including all information required for manufacture is created. We can also offer IP support, including drawings and detailed descriptions.
9. Manufacture - We can source, supply and manage production of your tooling, components, assemblies and finished products from our network of UK providers.
After each phase of the process, we produce a detailed report and offer a presentation at Design 4, to collaborate and discuss the next steps.
Product Design and Development - We specialize in all aspects of the product design process from the early concept stage to detailed design, tooling and mass production. We develop practical solutions and offer advice on the best route to bring your product or idea to market. Our diverse skill set ensures all areas of each project is well thought out.
3D CAD Modelling - We have the skills and knowledge to create complex 3D models utilising Creo and SolidWorks. This allows us to create fully functional designs which can be prototyped and passed on to tool makers for production.
Rapid Prototyping - We have a broad network of suppliers for rapid prototyping which include SLS, SLA, MJF, FDM, DMLS, Vacuum Forming, CNC Machining, Laser Cutting and Fabrication. This is important to test the product before committing to tooling.
Production - We have trusted contacts in the UK, and can ensure that communication throughout the manufacturing process is streamlined resulting in quality parts and final products.
We offer experience in a range of plastic manufacturing methods, most notably Injection Moulding, Extrusion, Blow Moulding, Rotational Moulding and Vacuum Forming and more. We also have experience with metal and rubber processes.
We also have our own product; Rainwater Terrace which is a range of modular water butts. This was designed and developed entirely in-house. We work with trusted tool-makers and manufacturers to produce this range.
