Supporting Info

Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) manufacturing, also known as composite manufacturing, refers to a category of manufacturing processes that amalgamate fibrous materials, such as glass, carbon, or aramid, with a plastic matrix to create a product with enhanced mechanical properties.

The process begins with the impregnation of the fibres with a resin system, typically comprised of polymers like polyester, epoxy, or nylon. This impregnation is performed under strictly controlled conditions to ensure the uniform dispersion of the resin, promoting the full realisation of the fibre's strength potential. Following impregnation, the composite undergoes a curing process where heat and pressure are applied to initiate polymer cross-linking, which grants the final product its desirable characteristics, such as high strength-to-weight ratio, superior durability, and resistance to corrosive environments.

Composite manufacturing techniques can vary widely based on design requirements, encompassing processes such as hand lay-up, spray lay-up, resin transfer moulding (RTM), and pultrusion. Each process has some form of manual element during preparation, so FRP manufacturing typically suits smaller volume projects when compared to other processes such as injection moulding, for example.

FRP composites form a vital cornerstone in the manufacturing industries of aerospace, automotive, marine, and construction, among others, given their versatility and high-performance attributes.
